Through working with informal waste recyclers, one of our community related interventions looks at setting up communally run waste buyback centres. These centres act as markets where the recyclers can trade in their waste for income, thereby attaching an economic value to discarded waste materials. In addition, through the food for waste programme, we provide these recyclers an opportunity to grow food gardens, providing each waste recycler access to fresh vegetables for home consumption when they deliver their waste to the buyback centre. Through these initiatives, we are able to prove that waste recycling has potential to act as an economic game changer in communities living adjacent to game reserves, with social, economic and environmental spin offs to be realised.
