In recent weeks, the ERP funded ICT centre at Waterberg Welfare Society provided a customised basic computer training course to 20 matriculant students mostly young women, who had been waiting for their results. Challenges in learning caused by the various Covid-19 related lockdowns brought about anxiety amongst this group, particularly related to their future plans. Would they pass their exams? Would they be accepted into university? Would they access funding for their tuition? Through this IT training programme, we managed to provide these youth with an opportunity to access the basic skills they would require in this technological age, regardless of their future prospects. Additionally, the group were introduced to alternative career paths, through business orientation, which could potentially see some of them starting various business ventures, either individually or as a collective under the cooperative model.
