Four suspected cable and scrap metal thieves were arrested in Centurion on Thursday afternoon.
Four suspected cable and scrap metal thieves were arrested in Centurion on Thursday afternoon. The men were arrested by Lyttelton police and private security company, Bull Security, near the Rietvlei Nature Reserve.
The arrest came about after a Elephants, Rhino and People (ERP) ranger at the reserve alerted the security company, according to Bull Security spokesperson French Jooste.
“The ranger said he had noticed some suspicious behaviour near the reserve’s perimeter fence,” Jooste said.
“Shortly thereafter an official from Elephants, Rhino and People (ERP) also alerted us and our members responded to the scene.”
“There they found the four men attempting to strip cables from newly installed streetlights.”
“Caught red-handed, the four were arrested and handed over to the Lyttelton police.”
Jooste said cable and scrap metal theft had been a problem in the area over the past month.
“We have had many cases of thieves stealing cables from the new street lights,” he said.
“This often resulted in the lights not working, creating an even bigger security risk in the area.”
