“I’m delighted to add my small contribution to the security initiatives at Rietvlei that keeps our wildlife safe. I also find that it’s an opportunity to clear one’s thoughts from business and work challenges, while affording you the chance to have some quiet time – especially at night when it’s cooler! Aside from looking after our much-loved rhinos, it really excites me to see the nocturnal animals such as bush pig, reed buck and the occasional serval. It doesn’t happen often, but it is sad when one encounters an incident such as a veld fire, but it’s comforting to know that the ERP rangers and human resources are available to assist City of Tshwane staff to respond at any time – day or night – which is what makes this initiative so successful. Rietvlei’s name is descriptive and quite accurate, because during the wet season large parts of the reserve become a marsh or “vlei” and can’t be accessed by vehicles without 4x4 capability, but this all adds to the adventure! However, you have to be careful at night when you’re on your own not to get stuck. Being an ERP Ranger furthermore gives me the freedom to practice my photography hobby, alongside a community of likeminded people who are passionate about Rietvlei. It’s a true privilege for me to be part of the ERP Rangers.”
To Derick and to many other ERP Rangers, we salute all your efforts in keeping our wildlife safe. You indeed live up to groupelephant.com’s mantra of ‘going beyond corporate purpose.’
